HOW TO PREPARE FOR A CAFCASS INTERVIEW FOLLOWING ALLEGATIONS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

Who Is This Article For?

This article is suitable for anyone dealing with allegations of domestic violence, including police arrests, family court proceedings or separation from their children. If you are in this situation, it is natural to feel stressed, worried and confused about what to do next to improve your relationship with your children and prepare for your Cafcass interview.

Who Am I?

My name is Leona Sears, Director of Westminster Psychotherapy Ltd, trading as Anger Therapy London and Anger Management Central London. For over 18 years I have worked with clients experiencing Anger Management difficulties, including perpetrators of domestic violence who need to demonstrate insight and behavioural change before child contact can begin or progress.

I will explain here what, in my clinical experience, helps clients prepare effectively for a Cafcass interview.

The most important factor is not simply obtaining a fast track successful completion certificate, but completing a robust Anger Management programme for perpetrators of domestic violence that demonstrates genuine engagement, accountability and insight that is measured in initial stages through thorough report and your performance at the interview. In my experience, Cafcass officers are skilled professionals who can distinguish between superficial learning, theoretical knowledge and genuine behavioural change supported by reflection and consistent effort and behaviour.

In my opinion, this depth of work is more likely to be achieved through one-to-one therapy than group programmes. Individual sessions focus entirely on your personal circumstances, allowing difficult issues to be explored in depth and helping you understand the factors that contributed to your behaviour and that will help you achieve a greater insight. Group programmes have their place, but they are not designed to explore each client’s individual circumstances in the same depth.

Video-call sessions with Leona Sears

What Do I offer?

I provide confidential one-to-one Anger Management sessions for perpetrators of domestic abuse or violence via secure video call. Most clients complete the programme within 12 hours, although some choose to continue because they find the sessions beneficial helping them deal with one of the most stressful periods in their lives. Others require additional sessions because of language barriers, limited insight or more complex personal circumstances. Clients with a criminal history or long-standing Anger Management difficulties often require around 24 hours to complete the work.

At the end of the programme, most clients request a detailed progress report that summarises the work completed, the insight gained and the behavioural changes observed and achieved. If you would like to learn more about the programme, you can click here where you will also find reviews from former clients. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your circumstances, please feel free to contact me directly.
