Dealing with ongoing arguments caused by anger management issues is painful. You love your partner but feel torn between the fear of your relationship breaking down and your fear of taking the next step and booking an anger management session. If that resonates with you, then read on.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN FEARING THE NEXT STEP
You probably know that not addressing long-term anger management issues means that something is missing in your relationship, and that will continue to threaten your relationship until it is addressed. However, you are not alone in fearing the next step.
CREATING A SAFE AND NON-JUDGEMENTAL SPACE
I have helped many people (see reviews here and scroll down on that page), and it is natural for clients to feel anxious before their first session because they tell me they “don’t know what to expect”. I then explain to them in detail the process, and by the end of the session they smile with relief and tell me that they “quite enjoyed it”. I always make a point of explaining to my clients that I will not judge them because I treat them equally and believe that, in general, people have the capacity to distinguish right from wrong, and my job is not to be patronising or tell them off for what they already know was wrong but instead to help them through a collaborative process to discover what is causing them to behave the way they do. We then try to solve these issues, improve communication skills, and address past issues that could be maintaining their anger management issues. Overall, I believe I provide the opposite of a fearful experience by creating a safe and non-judgemental anger management counselling environment in which clients can thrive.
Fear of discrimination, being perceived as weak, and having therapy weaponised are common concerns for people who are afraid to book anger management sessions, but they do not reflect how therapists are trained to work
A study by Corrigan (2004) found that, besides fear of being judged by others, people also avoid seeking support because of fear of discrimination for seeking psychological help and fear of being perceived as weak. That is understandable if the trust between you and your partner has been broken following a long-term period of anger management issues and your relationship has become difficult, and you worry that your attendance will be discussed and used against you. But I have good news for you. My reviews show no evidence of clients being perceived as weak, and because of your right to confidentiality, your attendance at anger management sessions will stay between the two of us. All that your partner may see is you in between your sessions, but in a less argumentative and more peaceful form creating a room for rebuilding the trust, bond and strenghtening your love.
